River with willow trees

Sale Price:£225.00 Original Price:£240.00
sale

A beautiful drawing from Germany to (almost) close the year. We love the details of this charming landscape, a river with willow trees, watercolour and graphite on paper.

This wonderful 116 year old piece is the work of Margarethe Raabe, quite a fascinating artist. She was the eldest daughter of German novelist Wilhelm Raabe who wrote about middle class life in the late 1800s. Margarethe was well known for her landscapes and portraits (mostly of her father) in oil and watercolour, and joined the Berlin Secessionist movement as a reaction to the restrictions on contemporary art imposed by Kaiser Wilhelm II. Her works were shown several times at exhibitions at the end of the 1890s, including in 1890 in the Künstlerhaus in Vienna, in 1898 at the Münchner Kunstverein, as well as in Braunschweig and Berlin. This piece was painted in 1909, a year before Wilhelm’s passing. She gifted the family home in Braunschweig (Brunswick in Lower Saxony) to the city upon her death in 1947 and is now known as Raabe Haus.

Under glass and super in its original white frame. 60cm x 46cm. Signed and dated.
